February 1, 2001 In the car with my husband one cold, crisp January morning, I launched into another of my exuberant monologues praising our new President. Digesting my words, my husband
thoughtfully replied, “He is the way he is because he is a true
Christian.” I countered, “Not to detract from Christianity, but I
don’t think religion is the common denominator in explaining his ethical
behavior. This man could be a true Jew, a true Hindu, a true Bahai,
Moslem, etc. And besides, Clinton, probably the most unethical President
we’ve seen in recent years, is also a church-going Christian.” This editorial is not political. Those
who know me well - and not too well - have heard my often-expressed belief
that the man is far more important than the man’s views. I
disagree with much of George W.’s ideology, but I am nevertheless delighted to have
him in Office. I condone the way he runs his life and, so far, his
administration. The common denominator, I believe, is
a deeply-felt sense of ethics. George W. strikes me as a man who is in
tune with himSelf, does not compromise the Self, does not sell out; and
certainly does not sell his soul for any cheap thrill. What a stark
contrast to his scandal-a-week predecessor, whose Vice Presidential staff
ransacked the White House to the tune of $200,000 according to the NY
Times. What a contrast to a man whose liberal, self-serving pardons
necessitate lawmakers to take a second look at the power afforded the
President. Assuming the President is a man of high moral character, the
Office allows this man of supposed good judgment to correct wrongs.
Apparently Bill Clinton’s idea of a wrong is whatever is not
self-serving. His lack of integrity has consistently been cloaked behind
accusations that he is being set up or lied about, and smoothed over by
his winning charm. Yuk. I am writing about George W. because
his ethical behavior, including his decision not to pursue the White House
damage matter, belie his rational and balanced underlying thinking and
motivation. His agenda clearly includes restoring dignity to the
Presidency and leading the Nation with a “Do as I Do” philosophy. Think about Bill Clinton as “the
abuser” who thinks he’s a victim, and George W. as “Buddah,” the
healthy, spiritually-evolved Self. Attractive on the surface, Mr. Clinton
has demonstrated time and time again that he is manipulative and
deceptive. He repeatedly sold out for the momentary gain, clearly abusing
the Office of the Presidency. While not as smooth, Mr. Bush appears to
have substance. Clinton is insecure; he needed to hold onto as much power
as he could. Bush is secure; he surrounds himself with the best minds he
can find. Mr. Clinton lies. Recall the “I tried it once, but I
didn’t inhale.” Or, his explanations on how oral sex is not sex.
Contrast this with Mr. Bush’s candor as well as lack of defensiveness or
apology in discussing his youthful black sheep days. President Bush’s administration is still new, and the jury is still out. Nevertheless, I predict that this wonderful spiritually-evolved, healthy, sane, imperfectly perfect human being we call “George W.” will restore our country’s integrity and provide the moral leadership we sorely need. I venture to say that our new President personifies that which I talk about becoming on this site. The Doc p.s. Even Trubble admires him enough to devote 50% of his time as one of the President's “Top Aids.” *Giggle!* |
